5 out of 5 stars Tossed my Cat Genie for this more reliable low-tech solution   January 3, 2009

I wrestled with a Cat Genie for about 18 months, dealing with the endless problems -- the frequent errors and beeping as the machine stalled (despite going through 3 motor units), the godawful clogs/smells, the pools of waste on my floor, the unpleasant and time-consuming maintenance, as well dealing with the significant expense of constantly purchasing the litter granules and the cleaning cartridges -- before finally giving up in frustration. I researched the options, looking for a system that would free me from manually scooping but which would also avoid the built-in problems that come with mechanical solutions. I finally decided on the Omega. I wasn't too hopeful after my nightmare with the Cat Genie (and let's not even talk about the piece of poo known as the LitterMaid), but I was immediately rewarded for my purchase. No constant vigilance and finding fixes -- just simple, effective litter cleanup. The day after buying my Omega, I wrapped up my Cat Genie, stash of cartridges and granules, and tossed the whole shebang in the trash. I could have sold the lot to recoup some of my loss, but I was so eager to see the last of it I didn't bother. I am so relieved to be done with the Cat Genie.

I don't understand the 1- and 2-star reviews. I think either the reviewers got defective units, had unrealistic expectations, or didn't set up and use the Omega correctly (not that it's at all difficult).

That said, the Omega is not without shortcomings. The "self-cleaning" moniker is a bogus bit of marketing that the company should drop, especially since some people apparently take the claim literally and expect to have to do no work. You do have to bang a couple of times on the bottom of the box when rolling to dislodge clumps. And some litter does spill out occasionally when rolling. And you do have to scoop out the odd clump now and then. And maybe the clips are not as robust as they could be, but mine show no signs of breaking after 6 months, and besides, what do you expect for this low price? (The Omega itself costs about about ten bucks less than a 3-pack of Cat Genie cartridges!)

The main advice I would give is not to overfill the Omega. With too much litter, the spills out of the box increase, and there's also more clean litter in the tray that you have to toss. (When I get a lot of clean litter in the waste tray, I just dump the whole mess back in the litterbox and re-roll, and that seems to take care of the problem.) Also, a more gentle rolling seems to reduce the amount of clean litter in the tray. And when you roll it, grip the waste tray handle and push it in simultaneously -- this closes up any gap where litter can leak out.

I would also recommend purchasing the Petmate Litter Locker Plus with Microban when you order the Omega. It's also a very good, if imperfect, product, that further reduces your interaction with cat poo. Just roll the Omega, remove the tray and dump the waste into the Litter Locker (which comes with a scoop for those errant clumps). Do a half-turn of the Litter Locker wheel, and you're done. The whole process takes about 45 seconds.

The Omega is probably a 4-star product, in my opinion; it could use a few tweaks to improve it, but considering the dubious alternatives, I'm giving it it a 5.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Never use a rake again, and no spills on the floor!   January 2, 2009
We've used the regular litter pan and rake for quite a while. Not any more, thanks to this wonderful invention!

Clean up is easy- just roll it over, roll it back, tilt, pull out the tray, and you're done. You never have to do the "hold-the-bag-and-drop-it-in" routine again. No more litter on the floor from rakes moving waste form the pan to the bag. It's very neat and clean.

Our cat does like to relieve herself along the sides, and with just a few taps on the outside of the box, it cleans up nicely. There are a few small pieces that even my rake won't get, so you will still have to change out the litter and wipe down the box once or twice a week, but this is cake compared to the old pan and rake.

I recommend this %100 to anyone who owns a cat that still uses a litter box. TRUST ME. This is a little piece of heaven. BUY ONE.

5 STARS

You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Non-Scooping Solution   January 2, 2009
We have had this litterbox for about one year (using World's Best litter), and would highly recommend it. We very rarely need to do anything more to clean the box than the standard roll to the right. Some clumps will stick to the bottom of the box, especially when the litter level gets a bit low: tapping the bottom of the box with your fist over the clump loosens it up easily. Our cat had no problems adjusting to the new box, and the closed-top design is helpful because, like her mother, she is thrower.

From time to time we have researched other automated litter boxes but always decide to stick with this one. No electronic parts to fail, no proprietary refills, and fail-safe operation.

2 out of 5 stars I Think You're All Wrong About This.   January 2, 2009

I rely more on customer reviews than anything else on Amazon. When I see something get 90% positive reviews I discount the 1 or few negative ones.

It didn't play that way this time. I'm a technically adept person and to understand how this cat box works doesn't take a whole lot. The concept of it is great, it follows the best principles of design: Keep it simple. The implementation however, sucks. It boils down to Chinese manufacturing. The cheap grade of plastic, and the bad workmanship ruin what could be great. The hole the catch tray slides into is clearly cut by hand with a utility knife. The lack of a more secure railing track for the catch tray to slide on when it goes into the housing leaves it flopping around when the box is rolled. The fasteners on the bottom of the inside floor for the grate to fasten into are very loose and will probably not last the overall life of the box.

There was a lot of clean litter in the tray the last time I emptied it, far more than should have been even with allowing for some natural spill over. I wound up having to scoop a good deal out of the main compartment the cat uses as well. Clearly defeating the purpose. Perhaps the previous ones sold were made with better quality plastic and functionality, or maybe I picked a bad month to quit drinking, but I'm going to look for something to replace it.

It's not an overwhelmingly expensive let down but I can't recommend you buying this. It's less trouble to have a straight box and scoop it.

5 out of 5 stars THRILLED with this box!!!   December 31, 2008
I found this cat box while doing a search on Amazon about the newest cat litter box that hooks to your toilet system. That box was too expensive for me but this one came up as a thumbnail, so I checked it out and I'm so glad I did! What a brilliant idea!! Not only did I receive it within days (faster than estimated), but it just plain works great.. We have an older cat and a new 6 month old who's a real stinker, if you get my drift. Our older cat hasn't been thrilled with sharing a box with the little guy, but this has really solved the problem.. One turn a day and their box is kept clean and both of them are happy campers. And not having to scoop anymore!! A dream come true.. It really is as simple as rolling the box over on it's top, rolling it back, tipping it slightly in the opposite direction so the clean litter refills the pan, set it back flat, pull the drawer out with all the clumps in it and dispose of them. Truly simple! This cat box is the best kept secret out there! I've never seen one in the stores and I'm wondering why!
I highly recommend it. By the way, we aren't using an especially expensive litter in it, either.. We've been using the Tidy Cat Scoops for multiple cats and so far, so good!
