5 out of 5 stars Great fun, fast games and really nice to look at.   December 3, 2008
I bought this for my son for his birthday. He has played all the versions of this game! He really, really enjoys how fast a scenario goes and all the different achievements. For him, this isn't game that lasts for days and days. A few hours and the scenario is done. Which he likes! I would recommend this game for anyone interested in playing with societies and world dominiation games.

4 out of 5 stars Great game. A must have if you like strategy games.   December 3, 2008
Civilization on a console. Sorta left a bad taste in my mouth when I first said it. I really thought it was going to be a dumbed down easy port that would let down anyone who's played the original series. To my suprise however this game makes a very smooth transition to consoles. The smaller scale that made me think this game would be "dumbed down" actually makes it more challenging because you have to really compete for resources. The A.I. is good like in any other Civ game, they'll really kick your butt on higher difficulty levels. This is a really cool game that anyone can play because of the various difficulty levels. The cartoony look works really well. The other Civs you can encounter are often times pretty funny. The only things I have against it are you can't play against your friends one-on-one (there always has to be a total of six Civs), there's really not that good of a diplomacy option, and you can't play someone else at all on the same console. Other than that a great game that anyone can enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars If you think it's too simplistic, try playing on "Deity"   December 2, 2008
So, I too was disappointed with my first game. It seemed so dumbed down from civ 4. As I decided to give it another try, it really opened up and I found that many strategies I had in the past, I could still use. You can still micromanage to a degree. You can still set your workers to only work certain squares, navel ships can provide bombardment bonuses to land troops attacking a city, and gosh darn it if I don't love being able to play a game in 3-4 hours rather than 13-14. I love civ 4, and I would love if they could bring it to xbox360, but this is a fantastic game in it's own right. I dominate on King(normal) level every time, emperor level is supremely challenging, and deity is frickin' ridiculous, though I have succeded once so far on that level.(economic victory) It is challenging to learn to use the 16 different civilizations effectively, and unlike some reviews here, I found them all very different to play. My girlfriend has become addicted as well, and currently has beat it on emporer 3 times (good girl!) Our sleepytime has been negatively affected though, I'm getting an average of 1.5 less hours of sleep per night due to Sid Meier's evilness!

5 out of 5 stars An Experience Designed for the Consoles   November 29, 2008
I have been a long time player of the Civ series on PC - starting with Civilization II in 1996 - and was excited to hear it was making its way to a console system. (I think they did a version for the original Playstation way back when, but it wasn't great.)

The first thing to know is that the entire game has been designed and streamlined from the ground up for a quicker, simpler experience. A PC game of Civ can take 20 or more hours to complete - usually lasting days or weeks. A game in the 360 version can take an hour or two - usually being finished in one or two sittings. When I was younger, PC marathon sessions of Civ were no problem - as an adult with a job and kids, I welcome the opportunity to sit on my couch and get a similar play experience in a much shorter time frame.

Some of the more detailed aspects of Civ PC are not present (you won't be sending around workers to farm specific tiles and build roads, or constantly trying to figure out why the happiness level of a city is low and has ground production to a halt), but they would be out of place in this experience, and would definitely make the games take longer.

For me, this perfectly captures what I love most about the series, and blends it with what I have time for now. I also love the hall of fame type score system within the game (in addition to achievements) - it's the first game I've ever wanted to net 1,000 achievement points on, and my eventual goal is to get every hall of fame point as well. (including beating each leader on Diety level, and winning once with each leader and victory style on Diety.)

As a final word - if you haven't played the series at all, this is an excellent choice to start with. (as is the PC version) There's something hugely compelling about raising your civilization from clubs and fire pits to tanks and the internet, and determining along the way if you'll be peaceful or warlike, and if you'll focus on science or money - or a balance between all of these.

2 out of 5 stars It gets to be slow.....   November 24, 2008

I am a great fan of Age of Empires PC Based game. I thought this would be a refreshing game and it was at the beginning. Once I started to have several cities and activities simultaneously happening, the game started to slow down significantly and the screen images would semi-freeze. Completely unacceptable for a $59US price tag.
